Kuala Lumpur – stop 2

Visiting the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur is nearly impossible, it is free and queues start at 7am, so we opted for a view of them from the Menara Telecom Tower, another great landmark in KL. We got a great view of Kuala Lumpur and an understanding of the expansion of the city and the many parks and gardens which provide relief to the city’s lungs.

We also visited a small cultural display at the foot of the tower and were entertained both by Malaysian dancers and a pair of beautiful Iguanas.

The black clouds were building so we hopped on the Hop On Hop Off Bus and saw Kuala Lumpur in full traffic jam mode. We stopped at the new Istana Negara (Royal Palace) which stands high looking over the city.

We also stopped at the National Mosque. We’d missed it on a previous visit because tourists aren’t allowed in on Fridays. After we were appropriately dressed we were free to roam everywhere except the main paryer hall. There were plenty of guides to answer questions and give you an honest understanding of the Muslim faith. We were particularly impressed by the space and light of the building – constructed 46 years ago and still serving its purpose, for 15,000 worshippers, without modification. There is also a school and conference and function rooms, which provide income to the mosque.

We had walked past a restaurant many times that had an array of Naan and Roti hanging out the front. I couldn’t resist any longer. It was worth it – the best Tandoori Chicken and Lamb Rogan Josh I have eaten in a long time, for the princely sum of 27.5MYR (about $AUD8.30). The wine and beer we ordered to accompany it brought the total bill to 150MYR! Oh dear, our western habits die hard.
