Ajaccio

Next stop was Ajaccio, part way down the west coast.  It is a beautiful town with a lot of French neo-Classical style buildings and wide, tree-lined avenues.  The tiny, ancient town with its windy streets is the birth place of their beloved Napoleon.  Everywhere you go you are reminded of him, street names, statues and souvenirs all focus on their famous son.

Dotted around the coast, on every outcrop are “Genovese Towers”, built around the 16th century when the families of Genoa controlled the island.  Some towers are in a poor state, but many stand as a beautiful testament to this island that has been conquered and invaded by many.
